3 Things You Can Do To Keep Your Motorcycle In Good Shape

If you have a motorcycle, keeping it on the road is a priority. To do this, you need to perform some maintenance tasks to make sure that it is in good shape. Here are some of the things you can do to keep your motorcycle in working condition.

Check Tire Pressure

Keeping your tires filled with air is critical for good handling on the road. When your tires don’t have enough air, braking may become a problem because the tires aren’t fully inflated. However, overfilling the tires can also be problematic, because the tires are more likely to blow out.

To avoid these problems, make sure that you have a tire air pressure gauge and check the pressure often. The amount of air your tires need should be etched into the side of the tires. You may also want to double check with your motorcycle’s manufacturer to be certain that you are inflating the tires with adequate amounts of air.

Adjust Chain Tension

The tension on your bike’s chain can become loose over time. If that happens, that causes more wear and tear on the gearbox and sprockets. It can also lead to suspension and transmission problems. Adjusting the chain’s tension will help prolong the life of your entire motorcycle.

Because every motorcycle model is different, consult your owner’s manual to determine what the tension of your bike should be; make sure that someone is sitting on the bike before you adjust the chain, since a load causes the chain to tighten.

While you’re doing this, you can also grease the chain, so that it doesn’t dry out and cause friction.

Storing Your Bike for the Winter? Use Fuel Stabilizer

If you store your bike away for the winter, you need to remember to fill the tank with fuel stabilizer. Fuel left in the tank can become sludge-like because of the colder weather and lack of use. After you put fuel stabilizer in the tank, run the motor for a while so that the fuel stabilizer gets to the fuel injectors and carburetor.

If you choose not to use fuel stabilizer, it is a good idea to drain the entire fuel system. That way, there is not a problem when you want to start up your bike.

When you use the motorcycle maintenance tips above, you can keep your bike in good condition. Check with a motorcycle repair shop, like Monarch Honda, to find out what other maintenance tasks you should be doing to keep your bike on the road.
